The right preset to choose
Hi,
I was using Windows Movie Maker for years, but now I’m evaluating the idea to move to Premiere Pro CS4, and I wonder which would be the right “sequence pre-set” and the right “export settings” for the source described below.
My typical footage is DV 720 x 576 and still pictures (1024×768, 1600×1200, 3888×2592), to be burned onto a DVD (normally, I was making them with Windows DVD maker) and viewed later on a 1366 x 768 HD-Ready TV set, from a distance of about 5m.
A bunch of different resolutions and ratios, I’ve got lost into!
The goal would be to get the highest quality possible in the above scenario, especially for still images.

The resolution of a DVD is fixed (720×480 for NTSC), maybe it is 720×576 for PAL users, so your project setting in CS4 should match the standard for your region, either NTSC or PAL. Basically, you want to match your DV video footage, so 720×576 PAL 48k audio (choose Standard or Widescreen).
Whatever size photos you have, CS4 will scale them to fit into that standard video-sized frame. In CS4 Preferences, check the box for “Scale to Frame” prior to Importing photos. If already imported, you can right-click photos on timeline and choose Scale to Frame there manually.
The only way you could get a higher resolution from your photos to your HD display would be to edit in an HD preset and burn to Blu-ray, DVD resolution is always “standard definition”. Most newer DVD players offer a hardware upconvert to HD output that looks good.
