  • sync of two clips varies between preview, export, and adobe media encoder

I’m doing a picture-in-picture video with two different clips taken from two different cameras that were running at the same time. I can sync them up in the timeline pretty accurately, and the clips play perfectly in the program window, but when I render with Adobe Media Encoder they’re way off.

What’s more, when I export the movie with the operating-system-based encoders (not Adobe Media Encoder), the sync is correct, but there is some frame skipping/shuffling — as in one video will repeat a few frames, then the other one will do it. This doesn’t seem to happen when played as a preview.

More details: this project is 30fps, and Premiere recognizes both clips as being 30fps, but I suspect that for some reason they might be at a slightly different frame rate than stated. Anything I use to play them reports them as being 30fps, so the only clue I have that it may be otherwise is the windows media player “statistics” window, which reports “Frame rate: 30fps” and “Actual rate: 28.5fps” (26.7fps for the 2nd clip). As I understand it, this is just reporting the frame rate actually achieved in playback, but it doesn’t fluctuate when I bog my processor down. It can play 3 copies of the clip, all at “28.5fps”. Does Windows Media Player know something Premiere doesn’t?

I had an issue like this once a while ago and solved it by “interpreting footage” at a different frame rate, but this made the clip previewed in the program window not syncronized and it would only sync when rendered with Media Encoder. Seems like a really weird bug.
