  Adobe Premier Entry Advice

  Hi,

  I recently purchased a new computer system, and am ready to move on from Windows Movie Maker. My hope is to become proficient in video editing. (I know that “proficient” is not a status that’s instantly realized.) My dilemma is this… Should I purchase software that will “transition” me from WMM to Adobe Premium Pro, or should I bite the bullet, endure the steep learning curve, and go right to APP? (There is an upgradeable APP bundle offer on eBay for $475, which seems very attractive.)

  Your opinions would be much appreciated.

  IMHO, I’d just jump right into Premiere.

  As far as proficiency goes, read the manual.
  Understand the functions of the editing tools, and why they exist.
  Also, train yourself to keep one hand on the keyboard for shortcuts. It’s faster, and it makes you look sexy. 🙂

  You won’t have trouble learning Premiere. It’s easier to use than WMM. If you’re serious about learning, you’ll soon get tired of any ‘intermediate’ programme you pick up. I’d say if you have the cash, go for it.

  Thank you Simon. The option of leaping directly from the wading pool into the deep end is scary. Even so, my inclination is to, as you said, ‘go for it’. (The reassurance of true APP journeymen is comforting.)

  How does the $475 offer strike you?

  I’m not sure as my department got my copy. Check out current retail prices and be aware that if you’re a student you should be able to get a hefty discount.

  I took the leap! My copy of Premier Pro should arrive today.

  I noticed that Adobe includes “Dedicated 7,200 RPM hard drive for DV and HDV editing…” as a system requirement. Unfortunately, my new system has only one hard drive (500GB – 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache). Since I don’t plan to do any HDV editing for a while, do I still need to install another hard drive?
