loss of capture function
Hello all,
After a lot of computer problems, somewhere along the line I’ve lost my capture function. Got everything else working- but I keep getting the “device unavailable for device control” message.
I had to load Directx 9.0c over my old DirectX 9.0b.
Even swapped over to a diff card- a basic 1394IEEE firewire. I have other firewire functions (sees external hard drives) but not my DV cam (Sony DSR PD100).
Win 2000, Premiere Pro 6.5Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm.
First check… R-Click on My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device Manager/… and make sure there are no nasty yellow question marks on your firewire devices. Than, check for driver updates.
Next, connect your cam with your firewire and power it up. Open your Premiere project and go to Premiere/Edit/Preferences/Device Control…
Under ‘Devices’, see that ‘DV Device Control’ is selected. Than, click ‘Options’.
In the ‘Options’ window you can click the ‘Check Status’ button, or click the ‘Go online for Device Info’ button. Your cam should show up in the list.Let us know…

Thanks for rapid reply- this edit has been a nightmare- I’ve lost a lot of time with computer crashes. Done device manager check- it’s good, the camera shows up in options- even with the camera unconnected. But nothing.
Got any ideas?
Haven’t done the win2000 updates- because there would be (presumably) hundreds- I never go online with that computer- so I’m reluctant to start now and everything has been so fragile- I’m afraid to try a lot of things for fear I’ll lose my progress.
Is there a specific capture driver I should be looking for?
Could it be a 1394 card issue? – But doesn’t 6.5 work with just about every card out there?
This is a late night- run to the Best Buy stroe- basic 1394 IEEE firewire- Dynex. I called thier ‘support” today to see if there are Premiere issues- they were useless. Tried Premiere site for third party cards- couldn’t find a complete listing…but even before I swapped in this new card- my old workhorse ADS Pyro Platinum suddenly stopped capturing…so something happened during the crashes and then the fixes.
I really don’t think it’s the new card -I’ve been using it for my firewire external drive- no problem.Stumped.

Maybe try Premiere/Project/Project Settings/Capture to see if 1394 Capture is selected.
Than, Project/Project Settings/General/Playback Settings to see if Playback on Desktop is selected.This is kinda’ sounding like a case of ‘When Windows Gets Ugly…’
Honestly, if I was having crash(es), plural, I would likely backup everything of value on my OS drive and do a full drive format and OS install – And do all of the OS updates.Any idea what started the crashes? You didn’t install any ‘codec packs’, did you?

Hi Vince,
Yep, everything is set up right. No good. If I remember right it started with my having stupidly loading the wrong driver for Nvidia. I removed it, then got some errors but was able to boot up. Oddly, I was able to capture! Ended up having to load DirectX 9.0c to get past the blue screen of death that hit. Fixed all the error messages- and then, all my video related software crapped out.
Fixed it by unhooking 2 internal drives. I thought the problem was overlapping versions of the same software (premiere, flash etc) that I found on the other drives. All was working until I went to capture. Plugged in my camera and the cursor froze on screen. This whole time the card was working with one of my external drives. What I didn’t realize – what I now know- is that it was a faulty installation of Quicktime that crashed all my video related software! Currently, there is NO quicktime on the HD and everything runs perfect again- but still no capture.
Back to my previous thought- after pluging and unpluging my camera, I checked the (previously functioning) card in the device manager- and after all the hoopla of freezing my cursor I suddenly had the yellow question mark- and it didn’t see my external drive. So, went out, grabbed a cheap 1394 and, now it sees the external again, but still, no Premiere.
It’s remotely possible I have blown out the firewire in the camera- but seems unlikely.
There’s a local shop that says their 1394 card is suppose to work with Premiere 6.5 etc- I’ll try that tomorrow- if it still doesn’t work then I’m inclined to think, again, something is wrong with my software.
I see there’s an Adobe update link in the capture window- I’m a little scared to try it- but is it possible hitting the link might repair any missing capture files?Thanks again Vince.

No QuickTime! Ughhhh.
All your apps should be running from your OS drive.
Only project and source files should be on your additional drives.
I agree, the cam’s firewire is probably okay.If you get a chance, fill out your profile’s System Details:
Win2K
RAM (ie:2x512MB)
Nvidia…
xxxGB internal IDE or SATA HDs
xxxGB PCI/firewire HD
Cigarette Lighter/Cup Holder
Apps & versions
etc…Maybe the Adobe update will work, but it really sounds like your OS/registry might be kinda’ jacked up.

Well, I may have blown out the firewire in the camera and taken down my capture card with it. Put in a (second) diff card, didn’t see the camera. Got a friend’s Panasonic- sees it.
So crap, unless it suddenbly doen’t see my old trusty Sony DSR PD100, I’ve blown away the firewire in the camera.
Not wild about the card I have in, was happy wityh my basic ADS Pyro Platnium, but can’t find them online- found this:

so may just try it- you think it will be cool?As for my camera- I am left trying to see if the firewoire unit in the camera can be replaced.
But I’d REALLY love to ultimately invest in a playback deck- something small/portable- that has a screen, that I can capture off of- that way I can edit on the go and use it to capture with instead of another camera.

Raine – Nice diagnostic on the hardware! I hope the Sony hasn’t retired. I guess the hope, now, is that you’ll try the new firewire card with the Sony – maybe? Looks like a very nice cam.
That card looks sufficient, I just like to see the windows logo on PCI devices, and it appears to have it. You cant beat that price, either.
Yeah, a dedicated hardware solution would be nice, regarding a playback deck. I’ve only ever used my cam though.
If all you need now is to capture, that might be the way to go. Definitely check some of the ads here at the COW for some nice hardware ideas.Wish this could have ended up all rainbows and bubbles. 🙂

Thanks Vince. Tried the Sony cam- no luck- so gotta assume the crash hosed the firewire in the camera too. OY.
But at least I’m back to editing- so very happy and grateful about that part. They don’t make the PD100s anymore- great l;ittle work horse- but I’ll worry later, about what to do in the future regarding playback capture.
