  4GB Limit on Capture?

  I am new to Premiere and to this user group, so I thank you in advance for your patience and your assistance.

  I was given Premiere 6.5 to play with to see if it would be useful to me in capturing and editing many, many hours of home video, etc. After some trial and error, I was able to successfully capture home movies from S-VHS tapes to my PC via my ATI Radeon card. Unfortunately, though, the capture always stops at 4GB. All drives on my system (Win XP Pro, P4-1.7GHz, 512MB) are NTFS formatted (ie, no FAT), so I don’t understand why this is.

  Generally impressed and excited by what I’ve seen, I am now planning on buying Premiere 2, but it won’t be worth it if it still has a 4GB limitation on capturing data. Should I save my $850, or is this just a limitation in Premiere 6.5?

  It is a limitation of your harddrive. Changing the drive format to NTFS will over-ride the 4GB limit.

  I appreciate the quick response, but as I noted in my original entry, all of my drives are NTFS. I went into Disk Management, and all three (C, D, E) show “NTFS” under the “File System” column.

  It might indeed be a hardware limitation, but it isn’t this particular one. Do you have any other ideas? Is there a way to force Premiere to start new files ever 3.5GB as a work-around?

  Craig- Are you using a capture card? A limit could be enforced there.

  Premiere does not enforce a limit on the size of captured files. Not 6.5, not Premiere Pro 2.0. If your drives are already NTFS, and you’re not using a capture card, I’m not sure what else to say. Something else is interfering.

  That something else could be a bad codec. If you’ve been installing codecs or other video editing apps, you might want to start uninstalling things.

  There’s propably a limit with your Radeon Card.

  I have the DV-500 from Pinnacle (try to get one via ebay). I can capture without limitations using Premiere 6.5

  Also you could check on your codec. I believe OpenDML is a keyword you want to look for. This will enable AVI to go beyond 2 GB (or 4 GB)
