  • Looking to create a 3D neon sign

    Hi there,

I’m looking to create a 3D neon sign and not sure where to begin. Any suggestions? Is there a simple 3D program or can I create it all in After Effects.

    Any help is much appreciated,

    Miro

It all depends on what you consider simple.
There is Zaxworks 3d invigorator that alot of people I know use when they need a quick 3d object in AE.
I personally use 3DS Max to create all my 3d and render seperate layers so I can add glows to what I want and so on. that way my neon glows a little and my clients like it.
It just depends on how deep you want to get into a simple 3d sign.

The simplest way would be using Trapcode 3D Stroke. But how realistic you want it to be is always the question.

go to trapcode-people.net and look or search for neon. I think it works very well. I’ve even tried the glow technique with strokes on regular layers so you can use the style without 3d stroke

I also used a small expression on the brightness to give me a flickering effect like an old neon sign. Use something like
“random(1,50)” (That may not be exactly right) and you’ll find it much more realistic. I also managed to find a neon font which really helped. Dan
