render buffer is for suckers
Posted by Nicholas Toth on July 6, 2006 at 1:13 pmHey guys, I was wondering if someone could define the error:
” COULD NOT CREATE IMAGE BUFFER (dimensionA)x(dimensionB) ”
fill in dimensions A&B with any number.I’m running a quad with eight gigs of memory, and i was told it can’t create a 720 x 486 buffer. This just doesn’t seem right.

July 6, 2006 at 2:33 pmHi,
I ran into a problem like this on a recent project where I had over 20 layers of vector artwork scaled up to 4500×3030 pixels. While I was outputting a SD video animation, the size and number of layers seemed to cause AE to choke and gag. I didn’t exactly find the solution, but it ended up working after I enabled the disk cache in Preferences>Memory and Cache and I reduced the size of the artwork slightly.
This was on a Dual 2GigHZ G5 with 3 Gigs Ram.
Re-booting the computer and making sure no unnecessary programs are running in the background before you start your render might also help.
Also, I think AE will only use up to 3 gigs of RAM. Anyway, I borrowed a couple of Gigs of RAM from another computer for this render for a total of 5 gigs, and AE reported that it was still only using 3 Gigs of RAM.
If anyone else has better knowledge on how to optimize rendering speed, I’d love to hear your suggestions as I’m running into this kind of problem more and more lately.

Is there an auto way to flush your cache after each frame is rendered? -

July 6, 2006 at 3:12 pmFrom what I have found, this is a memory/cache management bug directly associated with Intel processors. The quick fix is to restart afx or your computer, and that is ususlly all it takes. If you are getting this error repeatedly while rendering, the only fix I have found is to render the project on an athlon machine(or something other than an Intel based machine) I am not sure if the some goes for Intel based Macs.
I hope this helps.

July 6, 2006 at 3:56 pmSteve — just a warning — in office we have a dual 2.7g5 and a quad2.5g5, and they both get the stupid error so I don’t think it is Intel associated.

Yes, there is. Hold shift while going to the preferences to get the secret ones. Under the “secret preferences” dropdown there is an option for “Flush Every ___ frames during render.” This setting can help eliminate some out of RAM errors duing renders. For more info on the secret prefs, search the archives for “Secret Preferences.”
