  Adobe Premiere CC dropping frames on new Mac Pro

  I have recently moved from PC to Mac, and acquired a “loaded” brand new Mac Pro. However, I often have playback “jitters” (aka drop frames) on things as simple as an MOV I rendered out of After Effects. My Mercury PU playback is on. I am using dual screen with my 2nd screen as a playback monitor. I’ve seen demos of this same machine in Premiere CC flawlessly playback 4K with treatments.

  Why can’t I play a simple MOV in my sequence without dropping frames?

  Oh, the MOV plays fine if I open it in finder.

  With tongue firmly in cheek ;-), let me suggest that we need a bit more to go on than a “fully loaded Mac”. OS, RAM, HD layout, version of Premiere Pro, bit depth and data rate of QT file, etc would all be helpful. Then we can hopefully give you a hand on where the problem lies.

  and a bit about the files? QT with what inside of them? What is your storage subsystem for media?

  I rendered the MOV out of AE a lossless settings. It is rendered to a thunderbolt Gdrive. The music track plays from the onboard SSD.

  In short, I’m confused why my brand new, state of the art equipment is lagging on something so simple. I’m also a minimalist with what I put on my computer as well, so very little 3rd party or superfluous software or files.

  Have you tested read/write speeds of this drive? Uncompressed stuff will eat up bandwidth really fast, especially if you make multiple tracks going on.

  This literally was a single 1080p uncompressed MOV. Much less data then 4K, can stream off a Gdrive flawlessly. Besides, the file plays just find when not in Premiere.

  Chris,

  I still need OS version (10.9.5 is recommended), version of Premiere Pro (8.2 just came out) and the bit depth of the uncompressed video file (if not 8-bit).

  Couple of general housekeeping things you can try:
  1 – trash your preferences
  2 – clean your media cache
  3 – disable automatic peak file generation
  4 – Make sure your Memory settings are either the default (I think 11GB of RAM for 16) or less (you could put it to 8GB if you’re having difficulty)
  5 – uncheck ‘maintain audio pitch while shuttling’ in case you’re doing a lot of that as part of your testing
