How to transfer parts of home movie dvd’s to PC prior to editing
Hi
I want to import short pieces from 18 years of home movies which are archived on DVD.
I would like to retain as high image quality as possible. The dvd’s are 2 hours long. Most clips would start at 10 minutes perhaps being reduced to 2 after editing.I have Adobe CS5.
I would like to then edit them in Premiere.
I have tried with DVD shrink but a 9 minute piece grabbed from the DVD and saved in the computer only appears as a 9 second piece when I try to import to Premiere

I’d just take the whole folder structure from the DVD and drop it into a folder on your hard drive.
Then import the VOB’s from the folder into pPro.
Should read it just fine.

It may involve around 18 2 hour dvd’s. Will that take up a lot of space on hard drive?

Worst case scenario is 18 discs * 4.7 GB per disc = 84.6 GB.
(Well, I guess the real worst-case scenario is that they are dual-layer DVDs, in which case that figure could potentially double. Still not much space at all!)

Yes – they’re just ordinary dvd’s so that ok.
I’ll get ahead with that today and see how it goes.I seem to remember from another occasion however that when importing the *vob to Premiere it only accepts the first few seconds.
I’ll report back.

Well…..
Just tried with DVD shrink again in case I’d gone wrong on procedure but same thing happened again.
Used ‘shrink’ to put 10 minute *vob in hard drive then imported to Premiere CS5. It then appears as a 10 second clip. Not sure where the rest of the material has gone.However….
Then copied full DVD to hard drive….
Imported the *vob file with the material I wanted to Premiere and it plays and edits perfectly.This is great

Oops….
Just tried same procedure with next DVD.
Unfortunately this time Premiere seems unable to see or play the first half of the DVD I.e. 2 of the four *vob files.I may have to play the DVD into the computer via a composite convertor and capture the pieces I want in this way.
I’ll report back on whether there is a notable quality loss

Rip the DVD to an MOV or AVI file via Handbrake. Then edit with that. That’s what I’m doing with some old 8mm films I had transferred to DVD at Costco.
Much easier to edit with those files than the VOB directly off the DVD.

You can try making a copy of any of the .vob files and then change the extension to .mpg.

Thanks for those suggestions.
Handbrake didn’t seem to work and similar difficulty with renaming bobs to mpg.I’ve got closest to being ready to edit in Premiere by importing vob from hard drive having copied DVD into computer.
But then I find the sound track is out of sync.Going to try marking a key point on visual track and audio and then realign
So near and yet so far……

Well…. Finally got a reliable working system.
Downloaded a commercial DVD ripper and it does the job perfectly.
Thank goodness. Now I can on with editing 18 years of my nieces lifeNorman
