  Setting up Project for mixed codecs and resolutions…

  Hello ALL,

  Question: I’m gearing up for an edit, and the two source files are a QT H.264 1080p.mov, used for Blue-Ray, and a 720p QT H.264.mov. The interview is the 720p QT H.264.mov file, and the b-roll is the QT H.264 1080p.mov file. Do I up-res the project, or down-res? Do I take the QT H.264 1080p.mov and convert it down to a 720p QT H.264.mov? The final outcome will be for DVD authoring. So, at the end of the day, it’ll be compressed for DVD to 480p.

  Any thoughts?

  Make a 720p project. Scaling down is always better than scaling up.

  And use the “set to frame size” and not “scale to frame size” on the broll. That way you can do some reframing on the 1080 footage without degrading it and stretch the amount of shots you get from it if you need to.

  No need to upres if your final product is going to be a 480p DVD. Edit in 720p, use the 1080 footage to your advantage if you need to do a bit of reframing
