I have an unknown file just called “file” that will only play in VLC with awful interlacing. I cant get AE or premier pro to see it and I really need it for a project. I want to open it in something to convert it to TIFF or some such format to try and work on it. Dose anyone know any program that would be good for this?

    Hi Neil,

You’ll need to know what the format is before you cam attempt converting it using a third party software. But you can actually convert it within VLC using the stream feature. (Convert and stream). The interlacing could be from a previous export and that probably won’t go away.

On a PC, you can also get codec information on the file using GSpot (https://www.headbands.com/gspot/)

Thanks for the heads up on VLC that’s good to know. I found that my old mac opened it so I think he must of bee responsible too and I put it out of FCP in a Tiff sequence to try and get the best shot at cleaning it up so I never did know what it was or why it was just a file but Gspot sound like a good little app to have too. All the best.
