  Will Adobe Pro Premiere Pro CS6 Do What I Want With Canon VIXIA HF R42 HD?

  I’ve been using a combination late 1990s Sony DCR-PC9 camcorder [miniDV tapes] and Adobe Premiere CS6 to make good quality family DVDs for many years. I connect Sony camcorder by Firewire to an older laptop running Adobe Premiere CS6 to make AVI files, convert the AVI files using MainConcept standalone MPEG converter using it’s highest quality settings, and then forwarding those MPEG2 files to Sony DVD Architect Pro to make standard DVDs. I also upload the MPEG2 files to youtube. I’ve made hundreds of family DVDs with this combination and uploaded many thousands of individual MPEG2 files of family events to youtube. I’m now considering getting an HD camcorder and making blue-ray DVDs.

  I’m looking at the Canon VIXIA HF R42 HD which I’ve seen refurbished for around $200. The advertisement for this camcorder says:

  “The VIXIA HF R42 gives you the highest quality recording, whether you’re capturing MP4 or AVCHD files. 1080/60p recording captures twice the amount of information as 60i, and with images captured at a rate of 60 frames per second, diagonal noise is eliminated so even fast moving subjects show up crisply with motion and patterns clearly recorded. This greater sense of detail and faithful rendering of moving edges, plus enhanced color and fine tonal gradation, gives your video everything Full HD has to offer. A new bit rate of 28 Mbps is the highest in the AVCHD standard, and MP4 files are captured at a bit rate of 35 Mbps, so regardless of the format you’re shooting or viewing, image quality is as high as can be.”

  I just looked at the capture settings in my Adobe Premiere CS6 and see there is no capture setting for AVCHD 28 Mbps. There is a capture setting for AVCHD 1080p25 and AVCHD 1080p30. Do I need a newer edition of Adobe Premiere that would have the proper setting for this Canon camcorder? (again I’m using Adobe Premiere CS6 now). Please keep in mind that technology-wise, I’m still in the late 1990s. I’m used to doing my captures by connecting my old Sony camcorder by Firewire to my laptop and running Adobe Premiere. I’m guessing with a newer camcorder I’ll simply be moving files (I guess the original files will be AVCHD or MP4 files) to my laptop by USB, edit the files in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6, and then make Blu-rays (with a Blu-ray burner and software I don’t have yet). I can save the original files from the camcorder on 3 to 4 TB external hard drives.

  Any comments on what I propose to do, or on the Canon VIXIA HF R42 HD are appreciated.
