I have to edit a show I did not shoot- 3 panasonic AF100A cameras supposedly synched TC wise, with the main camera receiving a feed from the show audio board. Each camera has a different view, so I obviously want to pick and choose the best coverage to make a lean looking show a tad better. I’ve been told the best option is to edit in multi-camera mode. True? Using an iMac, with show files on an external HD. I imported each of the files into the project by clicking the ‘private’ folder for each. Then I selected them all, selected multicam option and then show in timeline. Couple of questions: do I need to sync the beginning of each clip or does the TC take care of that? It appears my the camera I’m using for the main video and audio track is off a bit- should I just pull all the tracks as far to the left as possible to ensure timeline synching?

How do I view each camera at the same time, so I can compare footage?

I’m not ignorant, I just haven’t used Premiere in years and I’m primarily a shooter, so any help or advice is appreciated

First it would be good to know which version of Ppro you are using. The multicam function has evolved quite rapidly and the answers to your questions will be quite different based on the version.

The answers I’m giving you are for the Creative Cloud 2014 version. Don’t know how much of this holds true for PPro6.

[Brent Troutner] “do I need to sync the beginning of each clip or does the TC take care of that?”

    TC takes care of syncing.

[Brent Troutner] ” It appears my the camera I’m using for the main video and audio track is off a bit- “

Off a bit in what way? is the TC off from the other camera, if not then what are you referring to?

[Brent Troutner] “How do I view each camera at the same time, so I can compare footage?”

You make a multicam timeline by selecting the clips in the browser for a particular group and then right click and chose “create multi-camera source sequence.” Once the “multiclip” is made you can play it back in the source window or place it in the timeline and you will see all the angles play back in sync.

You might want to look at an article I just wrote for the COW about Ppro multicam workflow –

Thanks for your previous reply, to my request for advice from the Premiere forum site. I haven’t had a chance to really dive into the project again for a couple of weeks but I’m back now. I still have some questions, and after consulting with a friend who works for Adobe here in Utah, the advice from him and others in the company is the best source for answers is the professional forum moderators. Since you replied previously, I’m hoping that you can advise me as to the below questions and concerns. I know all our time is short, so I will try to be succinct…. I really appreciate your insight.

Situation- It has fallen on me to edit and clean up all the elements from a show our group put on recently. I am a producer and Camera guy- I know how to edit for sure, but it’s been a few years since I really was proficient with the nuances of a NLE editing package. I have been playing around and roughing out the elements of the show using premiere, and also looking at insight and guides online—enough to confuse me about some things, thus my request for some clarifications.

Details: 1hr55min presentation, with musical numbers, voiceover elements, projected keynote graphics pre-packaged video spots projected, and I will have to throw in some transitions and titles.

*Show was recorded by 3 Panasonic AF100A cameras, jam synched, trying to cover different parts of the show ..lots of bad camera moves, etc.. Audio was fed into two of the cameras from a direct audio board house feed (audio sucks but I can deal with that later)
I now need to cut the show together, using the least terrible of the shots, add the better quality actual voiceover tracks, insert the keynote and other video clips and still, and possibly remove one or two numbers due to copyright problems (!) – then add transitions and titles.

Based on online, practice and reviewed help sections it seems I need to:
*Import the 3 main show clips into the project
*Select all 3 clips, putting the one with the best audio first
    * R Click create multi camera sequence
*R click on new sequence and open in timeline creating a blue timeline
    or
should I select on the new sequence, right click and make new sequence, creating the green multi timeline?

Based on the above described program needs, is it better to edit in regular timeline or multi camera? (I’m guessing multi- so I can see all views and pick the least bad…

After doing a couple of trial loads I can rough cut the show using just the 3 cameras, pushing the record button and then selecting the camera shots …is that the methodology for using multi-camera?

    If so-
*Is it better to separate the show into numbers and edit those as separate sequences, adding them into the timeline? If so, edit those as multi camera sequences?
*I can’t seem to get the audio to show waves in multi…what am I forgetting to do?
*When I drop one of the preexisting videos into the multi-time line, the video plays back, but not the audio…
*I’ve been trying to answer this one, but can’t find the answer- after doing a rough edit with the multi-camera, how do I change the location of a cut if I don’t like it or the timing is off? Is that where using J&K and K&L are best?

I know I’ve got a couple of other questions that I can’t remember but this is probably the meat of my questions..

Again, I really appreciate your input …you’re helping a non-profit save a bit of money and me some additional frustration…

First of all, my answers ae based on using CC2014, which is much improved over CS6, especially in multicam, and therefore some of my replies may not match to what you are seeing.

[Brent Troutner] “Based on online, practice and reviewed help sections it seems I need to:
*Import the 3 main show clips into the project
*Select all 3 clips, putting the one with the best audio first
    * R Click create multi camera sequence”

    So far, so good.

*R click on new sequence and open in timeline creating a blue timeline
    or
should I select on the new sequence, right click and make new sequence, creating the green multi timeline?

I don’t have any idea about these blue and green sequences. Once you’ve made the new multicam sequence you simply place it into another timeline – this new timeline is the one your actually going to be editing in. Do not right click and “open in timeline” – that command takes you to the actual multicam source sequence and opening it allows you to add filters to angles and re-arrange the angles, but it is not for editing.

Based on the above described program needs, is it better to edit in regular timeline or multi camera? (I’m guessing multi- so I can see all views and pick the least bad…

    multicamera

After doing a couple of trial loads I can rough cut the show using just the 3 cameras, pushing the record button and then selecting the camera shots …is that the methodology for using multi-camera?

I prefer to lay the clip in the new timeline and then use the number keys to cut between angles.

    If so-
*Is it better to separate the show into numbers and edit those as separate sequences, adding them into the timeline? If so, edit those as multi camera sequences?

Since you have only one long multiclip I don’t see the big advantage of chopping it up into numerous shorter timelines, but that’s just a matter of preference, either way will work fine.

*I can’t seem to get the audio to show waves in multi…what am I forgetting to do?

    That’s a problem I believe in CS 6.

*When I drop one of the preexisting videos into the multi-time line, the video plays back, but not the audio…

You shouldn’t be dropping anything into the source multicam tmieline. If your talking about the editing timeline, there’s nothing “multi” about it, it’s just an ordinary timeline that has some multicam content in it. It will behave like any other timeline with non-multicam material.

*I’ve been trying to answer this one, but can’t find the answer- after doing a rough edit with the multi-camera, how do I change the location of a cut if I don’t like it or the timing is off? Is that where using J&K and K&L are best?
    “

You change the location of a multicam cut exactly the same way you change any other cut – same tools, same methodology.
