  Filing Rushes

  Hi,

  I work with a mid-sized television production company in India. We’ve held out on tapeless for quite a while, mainly because of budgetary issues, but now we’re inducting some Panasonic GH4s into our equipment inventory. We’re switching from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere Pro CC for editing.

  Here’s my question: we need to figure out a way to file and archive our rushes. It was easy with tape. We just filed them with a librarian who labelled them and put them into an air-conditioned library. You obviously can’t do that with tapeless. I’m wondering if there’s a cheap (preferably free) and efficient way to do this. Is there a solution within the Adobe universe, Prelude perhaps?

  Any suggestions/experiences/warnings would be appreciated.

  Get bare SATA drives. Drives that aren’t encased in a shell…meaning a USB drive or Firewire drive. Get the basic SATA drive…as they are cheap. $120 for a 3TB drive. Get TWO for every backup you make…because hard drives fail so you want to have a backup. As my post super says, “If it doesn’t exist in two places, it doesn’t exist.”

  Then, get a drive dock. The SATA drives will slide right into them and connect to your computer.

  Then, get hard drive cases to store the drives…on shelves like tape:

  Copy the tapeless footage to the drives. Make one an exact copy of the other…meaning they both have the exact same files backed up.

  This is the cheapest way. There are more secure, more expensive ways. Such as LTO 6 tape backup. But you asked for cheap. And this is cheap, and decently reliable.
