  Widescreen / Anamorphic Matte

  Hello:

  I have been looking around for a definative answer on this, maybe someone can help.

  Often we are producing full screen D1 graphics for a client, and then suddenly they decide they are going to finish something widescreen and they provide a anamorphic widescreen feature.

  That is to say, they give us a D1 widescreen feature that is vertically stretched to fit the 720×486 frame. Here is the problem, we sometimes do not know what the aspect ratio of the Anamorphic feature is.

  For example. It could be a 1:85 or 1:78 or 1:66 aspect ratio. So we don’t exactly know how many pixels top and bottom to make the matte. Sometimes they just say, “Well, its widescreen”

  So I am wondering if there is a chart, formula website or even a plugin that will help us figure out the differnt matte sizes.

  First of all they should know what aspect ratio they shot it in. If it’s video then it is most likly 16:9.

  But if nothing else, look for features in the shot that you know would be perfectly round or perfectly square then undistort so it feels right. If you are off by a pixel or two, then that’s the price to pay for a client who doesn’t know what aspect ratio they are doing their entire project in.
