  AVCHD workflow file names – FCP switch to Premiere

  I’ve been using FCP for a few years now but recently switched to Premiere. I like how you can work with the AVCHD files with out uncompressing them.
  The thing i liked about FCP was i’d convert them to apple ProRes with a proper file name and they’d be on a hard drive, easily accessible through spotlight with a couple of keywords. Premiere on the other hand, you rename the file in the project but it doesn’t change anything and stays as 00032.mts.
  I tend to go back and reuse shots from past projects for newer projects but because all the clips are still a bunch of numbers i have to go through the clips and find the one i want.

  Is there a way to rename the MTS files in Premiere so they’re easier to locate for future projects or is changing the MTS file name potentially dangerous?
  I’ve tried messing around with Prelude but i’m not sure if thats what i’m looking for.

  The biggest caveat to renaming is structured media….like that requires folder sets (MXF comes to mind).
  If an MTS file is self contained (all audio and video embedded within one file), I see no reason why you couldn’t rename it in the file system prior to editorial.

  it may be worth thinking about looking at Bridge at some point. it supports a lot of the native formats now, and you can also tag a lot of them with meta keywords to describe them in as many ways as you want to make them infinitely discoverable (all in addition to the file name). and collections can easily be created leaving media in place on the drives, but creating sets that organize around whatever you need them organized around. Think of collections like bins, but outside of the NLE for use in any Adobe or Non adobe application.

  Using Prelude you can transcode your selects to different format (say, ProRes) and into a unique folder (Transfer Clips to Destination) and then Batch Rename all those clips in Bridge. You’d have to transcode though to get the clips out of the AVCHD file structure.

  Or you could just transfer your selects through Prelude without transcoding and it will make an AVCHD file of just those selects. I’ve done this for Exteriors, Interiors, Parking Lot, Talent for certain jobs. That way seems pretty easy to keep track of things for me.
