  Best 2 Drive Configuration for Adobe Premiere Pro

  Hello everyone,

  I’m new to Creative Cow. Been lurking for quite a while, and I love the information here. But this is my first post and some expertise would be greatly appreciated.

  I am a Multimedia Specialist and our department has started an initiative to work on video. I am working with our IT department to get my system set up to run optimally for Premiere Pro and After Effects.

  They currently have a system for me that has approximately a 200 GB SSD internal hard drive, with a 1TB Western Digital (non-SSD) external. What would be the best way to set this up for video editing? Where should I keep my scratch disks? My raw video? Where should I write my exported files to?

  I think the SSD will help some of the functions, but my worry is that the bottleneck will be the external HD.

  Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

  Any advice is welcome here. Even if it’s to say that there’s no way to make that system run optimally.

  If that’s what I have, where should the scratch disk be? And would the media be better on D while the exported files go to C, or vise-versa?

  It could run, theoretically. But a lot depends on other specs, as well as the kinds of video you are working with.

  For example, I run a two-drive system on my home PC. Apps and OS on C drive (an SSD), everything else on the second drive (a 2TB WD internal).

  I run CS4 on this system. It is fine for home video use. But I am also cutting SD-only on it, and not a lot of AE work, because it is a low-RAM system. At work it’s CC on a workstation with lots of RAM, a good video card and a RAID for storage, and cuts HD like warm butter all day.

  So what other specs? Will you be running CC? CS6?> something else? How much RAM? Video card?

  Thanks for the reply.

  It has 8 gbs of RAM and an Intel I7-2600 3.4 ghz CPU. I notice when rendering in After Effects the CPU struggles quite a bit.

  I have a feeling a second internal drive is going to be required. I mean the system runs, but it runs slowly….especially when rendering.

  So, would that be the best recommendation for Premiere Pro? OS and Apps on the SSD internal and the media, previews and scratch disk on the external? Seems like that keeps the SSD out of the loop when doing any reading/ writing of video by Premiere Pro.
