PP Adds Audio Tracks to Match Source
I’ve recently upgraded from CS5.5 to CC and loving the new features, however there is one audio issue I’m having that I just can’t figure out.
I want to edit with a sequence that has only one video track and one audio track, not including the master audio(V1 and A1). I’m cutting from XDCAM HD422 media that has been saved to my local disk using Sony’s XDCAM Browser software and imported to PP using the Media Browser.
When I insert or overwrite edit a clip to the timeline from the source window, PP adds 7 additional audio tracks (A2-A8) to the sequence. Why is PP adding the extra audio tracks to match the source? I only have audio recorded on channel 1 from the source and don’t want or need the extras. I know I can manually delete the extra channels but feel I shouldn’t have to. If I do delete the extra added audio channels so there is only A1 left, PP has a little plus icon to easily re-add the extra audio channels to match the source. Maybe my issue has something to do with that?
By the way I have tried manually creating a new sequence using the XDCAM settings and also created a sequence by dragging a clip in the bin to the “New Sequence” icon. I get the same issue either way.
Is this something that’s new to CC? I’m afraid the fix will be something so simple that I will feel silly for asking, but for now it’s really frustrating me. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Have a look at how PPro is interpreting your source audio channels (in the project panel) prior to using the media in the sequence.
It’s possible to override PPro’s default interpretation…
and set it to the way you’d like to behave
see:
Clip>Modify>audio channels

if you look at clip metadata you will probably find you actually have 8 tracks of audio but may only be using 1 or 2. all the tracks are being inserted in the timeline though.

I just started using Premiere and ran into that same problem. if you go to the clip bin you can right click and hit modify audio channels and select the channels you want to use. I think.

I checked the clip details and the clips do in fact have 8 channels of audio, however I’m only using one which happens to be channel 1. I looked at Modify > Audio Channels and each audio channel is set as Mono with one channel of audio per track. The preset is set to “Use File.”
So if I want PPro to act as I stated above I need to go through and modify these settings for every clip in my project panel? This can’t be the case. I don’t think I’ve ever had to do this before for any other edit system, including PPro CS5.5.
As a side note, I have noticed that if I have 8 audio tracks in my sequence but only target A1 and turn the others off, PPro only adds the one audio track and ignores the rest just like i want. But if I only have 1 track of audio PPro continues to add the other 7 to the sequence.
Do I need to have my sequence match the number of audio tracks for my source, even though I only need the one?

Hate to say it but the audio in PPro sux basically. What people basically need is to be able to do exactly what you need very efficiently. Instead they tried to have it do all of the thinking for you and in the process made really simple tasks completely baffling. I keep thinking I’ve figured it out only to be completely baffled again. 4 level meters for a two channel source? Somebody explain that to me please. Just way too many variables and practically incomprehensible track routing.

It sounds to me like you have some unique audio preferences active…
Does your camera actually generate 8 audio tracks? Is it more likely that you have 4 and you have it set up to interpret every channel as stereo?
You can select every clip in the bin and make the adjustment to all at once, but you want to reset your audio preferences for default interpolation.
The audio may seem complex to some, but I don’t know of many features in PPro that weren’t requested or even demanded by users.
…not that I don’t wonder if it could be a bit more elegant at times myself.

Hi Tim, thanks for the reply. I shoot XDCAM HD422 video on a Sony PDW-F800. The camera can only record 4 channels of audio, however XDCAM HD has the capability of handling 8 channels. Channels 5-8 are only accessible with an XDCAM deck. I think that’s why I’m getting 8 channels total with each video file. My problem is that I only need 1 of the 8, but PPro is forcing me to include the other 7 channels in the timeline.
I have checked my audio prefs and my default audio tracks setting is set to “Use File” for each type of audio (Mono, Stereo, 5.1, Multichannel Mono). “Use File” is the default right?
I agree that there must be a setting somewhere that is throwing me a curve ball, however I haven’t changed any settings after I installed CC, with the exception of audio playback is set to use my AJA Kona LHi card.
