  • Adobe Premiere – Importing Footage from SD Card Without Prelude?

    Hi there,

I’m an instructional media technician at a high school in California. We just purchased a site license of Adobe Premiere but didn’t get Prelude included with the bundle.

Students have been importing footage in Premiere off of their SD cards by dragging the folders onto the computer than importing through Premiere.

The issue is we’re unable to select specific clips off of the cards because the media is encrypted. So each time students end up dragging over more media than they actually need.

I’ve found online Prelude works great for choosing clips off an SD card. Unfortunately, the district can’t afford to pay for the software. Is there any other way to get specific clips off of a card using Adobe Premiere or using other software? Thank you very much for your time and support.

    Best regards,
    Kevin

Insert SD card, import files into premiere using the media browser pane, then Premiere >File > project manager > select consolidate and move files and pick a spot on the hard drive.

Test it out, it’s a little roundabout but should work.

So I got up to the Project Manager step but couldn’t find the consolidate button and wasn’t sure how to pick and choose clips.

The idea would be that students could be editing their project, insert an SD card and be able to choose specific shots off the SD card but not import the whole card.

Also just to clarify for all the CCers, I’m using Adobe Premiere CS6.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

You could also take a look at Red Giant Software’s ‘Bulletproof’. They have a great academic price.

It’s true they do have a good academic price.

But does BulletProof work with the Canon VIXIA HF M500 codec?

I tried to find more information on their site but there doesn’t appear to be a list of codecs that work with the software. Anybody have a VIXIA and use BulletProof with Adobe Premiere CS6?

This camera records in both AVCHD or MP4, which should be compatible with Bulletproof. However, they have a free demo version available for you to determine for yourself. You could also ask Red Giant, or check out their forum here on the COW.

    using this method…

the picking and choosing happens at the Media Browser point.

There you can make selects about what files you want in your PPro Project. This is the whole file from rec. start to rec. stop.

Then with only those files referenced in the PPro project panel you are using the project manager to copy them (clips in the project panel only) to the internal drive computer drive from the card.

So essentially you are making a subset copy from what was originally on the card.
