Creating subclips and deleting the original files, a workflow ?
I am using Premiere Pro CS4 and After Effects from the same install for my project.
I am trying to get the best workflow possible.
One thing I would like to do is take longer clips, make sub clips, and then delete originals without quality loss.
I will be doing a lot of work making sub clips and I want to save as much space as I can without losing quality.
I am looking for suggestions. I have tried to make sub clips in premiere pro and then I used the project manager to make the project smaller. like detailed here:
using-the-project-manager-in-premiere-proHowever, I seem to run into problems… I can’t get it to work perfectly… SO I thought I would pop on here and see what others are using for this kind of task…
Should I be looking at a third party software for this?

Subclips are not save to the hard disk, they are save in the project as links to the original.
In other words the original cannot be deleted.———————————————–

Subclips do not create a new file, they are merely references to portions of the original media. They do not add to the size of the media for the project.

If you want to subclip source material destructively…
then start in your project in Prelude for your basic logging.
there you can make new media from material you marks.

So I have gathered that a sub clip is only a reference clip… duly noted… thanks…
I guess I just assumed there was someone out there who like me decided to just let the camera roll and then cut the piece they needed out later.
I plan on changing my recording style I guess and only trying to capture that one good take….
The reason my files were so big for this first shoot was that I just let the camera roll and then thought I could cut out the part I needed and scrap the original. If there is no great way to do that without losing quality then like I said… I will just change they way I shoot stuff next time around.

To have this functionality, you would need to upgrade to a version that includes Adobe Prelude.

Well….I think the bottom line is….in a file based acquisition world, where many formats are based GOP structures. Truncating source while working native is not easily doable.
Today….bring all you media off your camera storage and pull truncated/transcoded selects thru Prelude and edit in PPro.
once the project is complete you can delete you original source and as long as you truncated/transcoded your selects on ingest to a non GOP media type you’re good for Project Mgmt consolidation.
If the Project manager were to include a transcode function or a pass thru of AME to make a non GOP version during consolidation….that might get you what you want in the future.
Certainly worthy of a feature request.

There is definitely some good information here…. I wasn’t aware of DPX so I looked in to that… Also, I can see why one would keep copies of masters now…. I get it… You need as many points of safety as you can get… I equate it to rock climbing and checking your equipment….
As for my specific needs… Well.. I guess I will have to decide on the specific codec, etc that is good for me…. Right now I am leaning towards… keeping audio and video separate as a backup master….
I was thinking…. png sequence with audio…
I am not sure if that is the best but probably it is good enough for me… and this would be lossless right?
