Keying and Exposure Mismatch
Hi, everyone. Long time lurker of your invaluable community, first time poster.
I’ve got an issue with some video that I’m trying to fix in Premiere CC, and I’m hoping one of you clever folks could give me some hints.
The video consists of an hour or so of a stationary camera with a panel discussion of five people seated in a row. To one side is a screen onto which a PowerPoint presentation was projected. The video is exposed well for the humans, but is blown out to almost fully white on the projection screen. I’d like to make the whole thing usable.
Now, I do have the original PPT file, and there’s enough visible to be able to match up slide changes if I import the slide images. I could just paste those images into place on top of the blown-out image on the screen (and have done this in the past, to perfectly usable effect), except that there are numerous times when one of the speakers stands and paces back and forth in front of the projected image. If I just pasted the slide images, they’d essentially be walking under them. So, I had this great idea, and no understanding of how to make it work… 🙂
Is there some way that I could color correct or something to make the blown-out white image into something that I could key with the regular images? I’m thinking I could mask off that area, then mess with the contrast until it is truly all white, then do a change to color, then key against it to insert the images.
Before I spend hours trying to make this work, does it sound reasonable? Are there better ways of correcting the issue?

Try duplicating the video track and placing the new directly on top of the original. Then use a garbage matte to mask of the screen area. Then make adjustments to the screen to alter the luminance so you can do a luminance key to replace the slides. Might work.
