Editable Sequence from Switcher
Hello,
I could have sworn I saw this somewhere on Creative Cow… Is there anyone making a product, like a NewTek TriCaster for example, that will kick out a Premiere Pro project file with an editable sequence?

Hi Philip,
What you CAN do with TriCaster, depending on the model, is use the “IsoCorder” function to record 4 or 8 video channels (cameras, program output, etc.) and then drop those clips into Premiere for a multi-cam edit. This would allow quick fixes for mistakes in the original switch, or a complete re-edit of the source footage from scratch.
I understand what you’re asking, but nothing like that exists to my knowledge and would not be practical to implement.

Thanks for the reply! I’m not sure if I was clear enough in my original post. We produce unscripted fine art tutorials that usually clock in around 2-2.5 hours. We would like whoever is running the switcher to be able to mark down a rough timecode of when a mistake was made, locate it in Premiere Pro later, roll the edit or switch the camera that was chosen, and pump out a slightly more polished rough cut (with some graphics added here and there).
Currently, we run three cameras, sync to a clapboard, download all footage from cameras, and multi-cam edit 2-2.5 hour programs from eSATA toasters. If I understand what you’re saying correctly, we would have to sit through the whole 2-2.5 program in Premiere Pro again, which would render the first switch basically useless. Using the TriCaster (which we don’t own) to tweak the original edit will not work because of the quantity of filming we do.
I think being able to tweak a multi-camera source sequence made by a switcher (eliminating hours of multi-cam editing) is completely practical.

I did understand the original request, and am saying that to my knowledge, there is no live switcher that saves an “edit list” for later use with NLE software.
However, here is what you could do with a TriCaster 460 for instance.
1) Perform the live switch, taking notes, and RECORDING all 3 cameras, while also recording the final Program (the mix). All recordings saved to TriCaster hard drives.
2) Connect the removable TriCaster media hard drive to your edit system using inexpensive hard drive dock.
3) Import all 4 video clips into Premiere (or any NLE). They are all identical length, in sync. Stack them on the timeline, Program on top. Jump to timecode where you want to “correct an edit” and do so, using the original camera ISO recordings that are right there. You can do this manually in a sequence, or use the MultiCam function in Premiere to see all 4 sources at once.
Very quick and easy.
Most switchers do NOT offer the ISO-recording that TriCaster does, so that would complicate matters with other hardware, perhaps using outboard recorders.
