    Hello,

I’ve been doing a lot of experiments in the past couple days with the different filters in Premiere to get an output that’s Broadcast safe, and so far I’ve failed. No matter what I do, unless it’s an extreme change, my piece is setting off the chroma alarm on my monitor/scopes.

I thought “Broadcast Colors” effect would just clip off the color. This doesn’t work, even though I set the ‘Maximum’ signal amplifier to 99%. I have to go down to like 92%, which makes everything look pretty awful.

If I try “levels”, I soften the RGB White Output to 252 which helps the IRE, but again, the RGB alarm doesn’t turn off until I turn it down to something ridiculous like 240.

Isn’t there just a sure-fire way to clip the top end of stray pixels after I roll it off? Avid has this ability.

You don’t say which version of PPro you’re using – I’m assuming it’s CS6, although it’s dangerous to assume. Have you tried putting the Broadcast Colors filters on an Adjustment layer? I don’t know why that would work any different from putting the effect directly on your clip (unless you have multiple clips stacked), but it’s worth a try.

Also, I’m not sure that taking your whites down to 240 is that outrageous. If I remember correctly, SMPTE ranges for RGB are 16 – 235. Here’s a good discussion of the issue:

    And some more good information:

Sorry, using version CC, and yes, I’m putting it on an adjustment layer.

I know what you’re saying about 16/235, but beside it looking pretty awful, that puts the waveform pretty far down in general. It doesn’t look right.

I will read the links you send me, thanks for this.

But, my question is, is there not a cap filter cut-off feature in Premiere? I don’t think it should have to be tweaked, I just want to apply the filter on it, knowing that all stray pixels are cut off. That’s what I can’t find that Premiere provides for me.

I’ll just add to this conversation that over the last several months I’ve completed over a hundred promos using PPro CC’s broadcast colors filter on an adjustment layer, and have thrown lots of wild colors and looks at it – and one of the biggest labs in L.A. has QC’ed and accepted every single one of them.

Confirming Joe – 16/235 is correct.
