Is relink automatic with a cloned media drive?
I’m working on a large project with 6 TB of media on an external FW800 drive. The system is a Mac Pro, dual quad core, OS 10.9.1 and Premiere Pro CC 12.2.1. Some projects are very sluggish, and we have problems with crashing and media unlinking.
If we dropped some drives into the tower, striped them as raid 0 and cloned the external drive to them, I’m wondering if Premiere will automatically relink to media. In Windows I think cloning and then assigning the same drive letter is all it would take to make the change invisible to Premiere.
If it requires relinking it’ll take too much time to be worth while. Relinking is better with Premiere’s current version but it’s still laborious with this project.
Can anybody report on their experience with this? -

As long as you keep the folder structure the same, even with a different drive name, Premiere CC should only ask you to relink a couple of items and will locate the rest automatically.

Yes, one would think. But the relinking problems on this project make me doubt that it does works this way. That’s why I’m asking if someone can tell me they’ve done this — clone a media drive to an internal raid — and had Premiere relink automatically, before I recommend buying the drives.

I recently had an issue where I simply renamed the folder that quite a bit of media was in. The internal structure of that folder remained unchanged. PPro asked for the first media file that it couldn’t find, and I pointed the way, but got the dreaded “Unsupported format” error so often seen when importing certain media formats when your activation has gone haywire, except that it was even giving the error on WAV files that were created withing Premiere. I changed the main folder’s name back to it’s original, and everything worked as expected.
So, it SHOULD work, but you wont truly know until you try. I certainly wouldn’t get rid of the media on the original drive until you know for sure.
