  Updating to a hex core

  Hey all. I was thinking of updating my system with obviously spending the least. Here is my current spec:

  Intel i7 950 @3.07GHz
  Asus Sabertooth x58
  Corsair Vengeance 12GB Ram 1600MHz
  Corsair H60 Liquid Cooling System
  Asus GTX 550Ti
  Corsair 750W
  Multiple HDDs (3)
  Cooler Master HAF922

  Now I was looking at replacing my processor. I found a Xeon L5639 processor and it fit my budget. Its a hex core processor with 12MB cache @2.4 GHz but can be easily overclocked with my current settings to 3.2GHz. Should I go for it? There are people all over the internet using this processor with the same board.

  Updating to 4th gen is a lot of money as I would need to change the board as well. But with the xeon its only the processor as it has the same socket (LGA1136). All the softwares that I use would take advantage of the extra two cores and 4 threads that I will get.

  Thats probably worth the upgrade, you should upgrade the memory to 16gb or 24gb even better.

  I will update the RAM later in the near future. Is it okay to run a hex core with 12GB RAM? That is 2GB per core. I read somewhere (dont remember exactly where) that 2GB per core is the baseline. Like it shouldnt be below that. Is it true?

  Well I just read an article where it says that the baseline is actually 1 GB per core. So 2GB per core is better. So I guess I am in the clear.
