Premiere Pro Crashing with MacVIdCard’s GeForce GTX 780
Just installed a MacVIdCard nVidia GeForce GTX 780 in my MacPro 3,1 (8 cores, 32GB RAM) and Premiere Pro CC is quitting quickly on open every time. If I change the display card – no problems. This quitting behavior is the same before and after installing the latest CUDA for Mac and before and after altering the text list of recognized cards in the app’s Contents. (BTW, that did work for AE CC allowing it to recognize the power of the 780’s CUDA).
Any ideas/fixes out there??

Think you are into slightly unsupported territory here, which i’m sure you realise. I seem to remember something about power to the card being an issue but worth checking. Another reason why windows looks a better option to me currently.

Power is fine and card is working fine in all other respects … for a two monitor set up and for all other Adobe CC apps, including AE. With modifying the text file listing to accepted cards, AE is even able to access the CUDA and OpenCL options with no problems … at least none encountered yet, unlike with Premiere not even starting up past a couple seconds of the logo screen.

Found this from another forum, looks like 10.9 could solve your problem “Fortunately OpenCL works on the GTX 780 on the latest 10.9 Preview. For some reason Luxmark scores are about 10% better than on Windows 8.0 (although Windows 8.1 reportedly has nVidia performance improvements too). So it’s likely there will be support when Mavericks is released, at least.
Note that cuy Adobe Pr CC doesn’t officially support the GTX 780 on either Windows or Mac, whereas the GTX 680 is supported on both platforms:https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/tech-specs.html
EDIT: Premiere Pro CC loads OK and recognizes that OpenCL is running on an Uncertified card, but allows it to be used. I’ve no idea whether or not it’s performing as expected, however.”

Thanks, Chris. This may be narrowing things down to an issue of the 780, Mtn Lion, and OpenCL specific to Premiere Pro. Appreciate that lead. Now who do I know who’s a developer and can get me that preview copy of Maverick????

All I can say is that I have MacVidCard’s GTX770 with PPro CC, Mac Pro 5,1, Mac OS 10.8.4 and appropriate CUDA and NVidia drivers from their site. I modified cuda supported text file as you mention and it’s running great with no issues. Do you have plugins that might be affecting operation? Also I do think you might be pushing or overdoing your power draw on your 3,1 Mac Pro, which doesn’t have the most powerful power supply with that card. Did you get advice from MacVidCards? They have done a lot of testing, probably with your configuration, they might also help.

Thanks, Keith. Glad to hear yours is working well. I guess that’s a very similar board being a 770 and mine’s a 780. MacVidCards guy Dave Pirinelli. He is guessing an OpenCL conflict and has forwarded my crash reports on to nVidia. Also, he has approved his 780 mod for the MacPro3,1 as far as the requirements he listed on eBay and he has not mentioned that as a possible issue in our email discussion – so I’m counting on this 780 being OK for power.

Any updates on getting the GTX 780 working on your Mac 3,1? I see that card is now officially supported on a PC with the latest CC update. Does the October update fix it on a Mac?

Yes! Actually it does. Before Maverick, the GeForce GTX 780 would not allow Primiere Pro CC to open at all. Now it is significantly speeding up its functioning. Everything in the timeline reads yellow (no rendering to improve the image playback). So … all is looking good with these CUDA and OpenCL cards now in Maverick.
