  Mixing 23.976 and 29.97 footage – Premiere CC

  Hi guys,

  I have done some googling and cannot really find the answer I am looking for.

  I have mixed footage of 23.976 and 29.97.

  The 29.97 footage is 1080p MPEG-4 Quicktime

  The 23.976 footage is XDCAM EX 35 1888×1062 MPEG video

  What is the best way to edit and output this footage? Using a 29.97 sequence and output as 23.976 or 23.976 sequence and output as 29.97? Do I need a pulldown or does Premiere CC do this automatically (I’m a bit sketchy on this!)? Also, do I need to ‘interpret’ any footage? I have no audio that needs syncing to it.

  What are you delivering? Is it for broadcast or Web? Is the majority of your footage 29.97 or 23.98. I would make your sequence setting match the frame rate of the majority of your footage. You can add the 23.98 clips to a 29.97 sequence and I believe it adds the pulldown on the fly. However I think for other frame rates like 25 to 23.98 you need to interpret footage first as it does a speed change like cinema tools. Otherwise it will duplicate or delete frames accordingly. I could be wrong on this, so anyone feel free to clarify.

  It’s for web so probably room for manoeuvre. But I want it to the best I can get it as it’s a new project for me and I’m set to impress!

  Currently, I’m using a 29.97 frame rate sequence as the majority is 29.97.

  It’s a complex subject but to me the essence of the choice is:

  Footage shot at 23.98 converts to 29.97 (using 3:2 pulldown which spreads 24 frames over 30) in a way that preserves the 24 fps “look” very well. Going the other way around (converting 29.97 footage to 23.98) results in a cruder, un-smooth motion that is neither like the 29.97 original nor like the look of footage shot at 23.98. It’s because going from 30 to 24 means throwing away 6 frames every second or every fifth frame. Optical flow, aka fluid motion technology can apply complex processing to average the motion within the remaining frames to smooth the look. But it’s an extra step, time consuming and not always successful.

  Also I prefer to avoid the strobing of motion graphics that I see at the lower frame rate.

  So faced with anything near a even mix of 23.98 and 29.97, I’d go with a 29.97 sequence.

  Thanks all. Good to know I’m doing the right thing to get the best look.

  I think as it’s for web there is no need to do the extra step as time is (as always!) of the essence 🙂

  Does this mean that the 23.976/29.97 pulldown happens automatically upon export in Premiere?
