  • Multicam interviews, seperate Audio. How to transcribe and setup in post?

So my work flow for interviews is with DSLR Cameras. I usually have 2 or 3 cameras and audio being recorded to an external audio recorder (h4n). I am trying to get an ingestion work flow configured for how to transcribe the audio, connect the external audio with the footage, and setup a multi camera sequence.

Does anyone have suggestions on the order I should do these things in as well as technical steps? Right now I’m aware of transcribing tools in prelude/premiere as well as premiere’s multi-cam sequence. I’m not sure though what gets connected to what… such as the transcription connected to the audio file.. the audio file becoming the main audio track for the video.

My interviews are usually 10 – 30 minutes long and will be cut down to 2 minutes worth of content to be intertwined with larger stories. I’m looking to create best practices and would love some broad advice as well as specific technical info. Thanks!

    Hi Joe,
Premiere Pro works best with a script that is already transcribed. Then it matches the speech to the text so that you can edit using the words instead of in/out points or timecode. You can transcribe, however, the quality might be lower than what you desire. You’ll have to run a test first and see if it will work for you. It should save you time, regardless.

This article is a little dated, but I find it helpful in devising a workflow.

    Hey Kevin,

Thanks. So transcribing should go like this:

    1. Manual transcription. ( I understand I can use the auto transcription as a possible starting point, but mine is no good)

    2. Link text transcription and use Prelude/PPro transcription

    3. Correct any timing/text errors.

For me transcription is very important and I’d much rather edit from a text based script than searching video.
