  • Which video card for G5 QUAD?

Just wondering if anyone knows the tangible benefits relating to AE7 of the 3 different video cards offered with the G5 Quads. I know Open GL has improved significantly with AE7 and looking at Adobes site and the Open GL support page it seems the base card 6600 provides full Open GL functionality in AE7.

Are the other two cards 7800 or the Quadro (which is think is mainly for 30″ cinema screen users) worth upgrading?

As far as cost vs. performance, the 7800 is well worth it – you will see nice speed improvements in all OpenGL applications. TheQuadro is a hi-end workstation card, which is very very expensive. According to benchmarks and articles I’ve seen, it is not worth the extra $$ unless you are doing hi-end 3D work, such as Maya. Even for gaming, the quadra doesn’t really offer any significant improvements over the 7800. Here’s hoping the new Intel “mac pro’s” offer SLI!

Thanks for comfirming what was the gut feel….looking forward to seeing the benefits of going from a dual to a quad and finally a card that can leverage Open GL properly. My experiences with Open GL in the past have always led to disabling it, but sounds like it is quite well integrated now.
