fast start problem
i’m using AE 6.5 (Win XP) to create a quicktime with “fast start” streaming enabled.
no matter what i try, i cannot get the quicktime to actually progressively play
while the download is in progress. i’m generating the quicktime via the AE “export”
function, so the requisite parameter is definitely set. can anyone clue me in as to
what i need to do to get this to work? this can’t possibly be that hard to do… no?thanks,

ps: sorenson 3 is used for the codec…

Progressive Download waits until enough of the video has downloaded before it starts to play. “Enough” is the amount that will allow an uninterrupted playback once it gets going. It gives a head start so the playback head never has to stop. That’s the theory, anyway.
If you have a movie which has a high data rate, QT will have to download a lot of it (time-wise) in order to ensure uninterrupted playback, because the playback speed will be faster than the download speed and there’s a danger of the playback head catching up and stopping.
So if your movie is high data rate and short, you might have the whole thing downloaded before it starts to play.

hey, i got it to work after all… 🙂
i re-exported the film using QT Pro and voila the “fast start”
setting works! i guess it’s some weirdness of my AE install
that led to the discussed (mis-)behavior. QT settings
in AE 6.5 are strangely implemented anyway. why can i set the
“fast start” flag when i export a movie, but not when i render
it…? i hope they fixed this in the new release…thanks again,

using qtpro is the only way i’ve ever been able to make this work. i don’t think you can access all of the lags from the output module. i always render animation then render for e-mail or web from qtpro because i don’t have any cool compressors like squeeze or cleaner.
