    Here is my situation:

A friend of mine has a different editing style than me. However, he seems to run into more issues with Premiere crashing on him than I do, so I’m wondering if it’s something he may be doing. Usually, when I start an edit, I import and organize all my clips and assets into bins in my project window and then go to town on my edit.

However, I noticed that he works off of the Media Browser only. For example, he’ll navigate to Clip A stored on an external RAID drive, double-click to open the clip in the Source window, set his in and out and then place the clip into the timeline. Then if he wants to use another section of Clip A, he’ll double-click the same file from the Media Browser again, set the in and out, and then place the clip into the timeline again. This method seems to work for a little while, but then starts to crash a lot especially in projects with a lot of clips. I noticed that if for example, Clip A was used 10 times in a sequence, there will be 10 “Clip A” files in the Project Window.

The biggest issue seems to happen when GoPro footage is used. Normally, the converted/Protuned file from Cineform is used (either the decompressed AVI or MOV file Cineform creates), but sometimes the compressed mp4 file directly from the camera gets used. I have noticed that when Premiere tries to play the mp4 clip, it starts to show signs of bogging down if not crash. Sometimes even just trying to opening a GoPro clip, regardless of format, immediately crashes Premiere. (Still assuming clips are only opened and brought into the project through the media browser)

    So my question is:

If opening the same clips from the Media Browser multiple times, would that create a caching issue or some other issue that could be causing Premiere to crash?

I am not sure about that workflow crashing PrPro or not, but it is certainly better to keep one clip in your project just for org. sake. If you end up using multiple instances of an asset you could run into problems when it comes time to edit the particular instance of that asset. Wasting a lot of time.

Your friend my want to pick up this book, An editors Guide to Premiere Pro, either in paperback or kindle version for a great primer on the best ways to work in the application.
