  GoPro 2k and Canon 5d Workflow

  I have a few clips from the new GoPro Hero 3 (2K footage, .mp4, 23.98). What’s the best way to convert this footage into a sequence that mostly has Canon footage? My sequence preset is the Canon 1080 24 fps preset.

  Could I load the GoPro footage into MPEG Streamclip, wrap it into a .mov, change the codec to H.264, re-scale it to 1920 x 1080 and simply just mix it in with the rest of my canon footage?

  The 24fps presets for DSLRs are usually 23.976. Not that dropping a 23.976fps clip onto a 24fps timeline does much; it duplicates every 1001st frame.

  From there it’s mostly frame size. If GoPro calls their 1080×1920 image 2K then you’re working with, basically, the exact same files.

  Streamclip wouldn’t be needed at all in this situation. GoPro footage uses H.264 compression. Premiere also bypasses Quicktime for the h.264 codec so performance in the mp4 container should be the same as well.

  Thanks for your response Angelo,

  You’ll have to excuse me, this is my first time working with GoPro footage.

  Some of my GoPro clips are 1920 1080 but others are 2,704 x 1440 which I assume is their 2k. Aside from aspect ratio, you mean to tell me that they will behave just like my 5D footage and I won’t have to take any further steps?

  Besides resizing for the aspect ratio, performance should be near the same. GoPro considers that file to be ~2.7K so a borderline system may see some frame skipping, but this can generally be resolved or avoided if you have a good GPU.
