  What to upgrade on computer?

  Hi, what should I upgrade on my computer to make editing videos less painful (slow)? I get laggy play back and slow renders. I have seen people on youtube with smooth playback with no rendering.

  I am using:
  Windows 7
  Premiere pro cs4

  AMD phenom II X4 995 Processor 3.20GHz
  8GB
  160 GB main hard drive 10,000 rpm
  NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GSO

  Are you editing footage off your internal hard drive? If so then your internal hard drive is running Windows 7, Premiere Pro, and trying to serve up video at 24, 25, or 30 frames per second….and that ain’t a pretty picture! 😉

  In your given setup, I would look for increased storage space/speed via an external drive (not USB connected if possible….USB is a slow connection for video editing). It may also be time to look at moving to a more recent CS release to take advantage of more features and better code (better code taps into more of your GPU and processing power).

  Hey Ryan, I forgot to mention that I have two additional 2tb internal hard drive which I use to store my videos files. I also set my scratch disc to these drives. I try to upgrade to cs 6 soon. Do you think I should upgrade anything else? This GPU seems like a really good deal.

  That’s good about the scratch drive.

  As for the GPU, make sure it’s on Adobe’s supported list of GPU’s for CS6. I would try to steer towards whatever they’ve certified as it will run more stably and give you the best performance.

  Thanks! So everything else with my setup is fine? I really would love to edit without having to render. does my monitor resolution slow me down, I am at 2560×1600?

  These card are pretty pricy, would this one give me good results, or should I invest in a better one for long term?

  With your current GeForce 9600 – probably.

  I’d look at the following to run CS4 better and to have better chances with CS6+:

  – Intel Core i7 CPU (not AMD)
  – 8GB is fine for CS4; for CS6 you might want to up it to 12-16GB. Memory is cheap.
  – GTX-650Ti graphics
