I’ve come across this frustrating issue in the middle of a project:

Absolutely nothing will play in either the timeline and source monitor. I was going about editing a normal project, and all of a sudden I noticed the JKL keys weren’t working. Weird. I tried pressing the play button manually. The button will change to the play icon, but nothing will happen.

I’ve restarted Premiere, started a new sequence, re-booted my machine and even tried it in Premiere CS5.5 and nothing will work. I’ve tried any and all types of media as well. The button simply appears to be ‘broken.’

The rest of the software behaves normally, and I can even scrub through my footage. I just can’t shuttle through it or play it.

I’m running (primarily) Premiere Pro CS6 on a Windows 7 machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m on a deadline and Premiere just flat out broke on me.

It sounds as if the first thing you might try is opening and closing the hardware settings. It’s possible that something may have gotten confused in there. It that doesn’t work, read on – there are some issues discussed here:

Thank you. The problem appeared to be in the Audio hardware. I simply changed it back to default and it’s working now.

It’s weird that this problem occurred though, as I had been using the settings for a while before Premiere started acting up.

    Thanks again.
