Where does Playback Resolution get computed ?
Hello,
Does anyone know at what level (system or program) the playback resolution gets pulled?
Moreover does Premiere request the full resolution file from the system, then once the file hits Premiere pull out 1/4 of the pixels? using 100% of the file size.
or
does Premier request 1/4 of the pixels from the system and then pipe that into Premiere, using 25% of the file size.
is this the idea behing Adobe Anywhere?
Just to get some context, I am in the middle of figuring out a NAS/SAN solution and am looking into throughput bottlenecks and such.
this kind a specific questions so please let me know if the question itself needs some clarification.

Reading full file sizes, serving up (displaying) scaled down (e.g. 25%) version of it.

Generally yes, the server preps the stream that is scaled down and compressed as needed, somewhat similar to “auto” setting on YouTube. The reasons are different though. For local playback, you may need to scale down because the computer or storage are not fast enough for full-res playback. With Adobe Anywhere, it’s mostly about the bandwidth.
(These are somewhat educated guesses, not facts. :))

Yes, Alex has it right.
The scaling (the size of the image, not the resolution fraction) function in Premiere Pro is a post-decode function. There are media types where you can set the decode complexity and take advantage of less decode “work” if you’re using a smaller frame size for reference purposes…CineForm comes to mind. They’ve been using their wavelet-based codec to run they’re full res media as “half res” to speed up editing response for 10 years. RED proxy files are meant to serve the same purpose, but the process is a little different.
Most media that doesn’t have that capability built into the codec itself, is completely decoded at full frame, interpreted to 4:4:4 (fill in the bits needed to make a complete picture from 4:2:0, etc) at full color precision and then scaled to your overlay size. Systems with a supported GPU get all that stuff that comes after the decode step off the CPU and onto the GPU for better performance.

From what I can tell…purely from observation….is that Anywhere is different from a traditional workgroup and from a proxy workflow.
Material edited via Anywhere is Local to the Anywhere server, but remote from your location.
You copy of Premiere is local to you. So the Anywhere server is essentially doing the heavy lifting working at full resolution, but the only thing it’s supplying to you is the image stream to your viewports.
Sort of like a screen sharing data stream, but you are essentially using Ppro as a client to receive the image stream as directed by you to the various viewports you are working with in the application.
So on a LAN it will be awesome. In a WAN it will still be pretty awesome….but there will be some bottlenecking if people contributing source material for collaboration are remote from the Anywhere server.
I’ve been tossing around some ideas on how they might deal with that…but it’s purely speculative/wishful thinking on my part.
I’m sure NAB will reveal a lot about that technology.
