  Hardware – new to Mac & Premiere

  Starting editing at school and need a Mac to run Premiere. Cost is a big issue. I’ve checked forums about best minimum requirements, since I’ll be doing small projects, and (surprise!) opinions are mixed.
  Aside from Adobe’s system requirements, it seems I need at least 2 hard drives (at least one running 7200 RPM) and a NVIDIA or Radeon graphics cards (seems NVIDIA is preferred) and stay away from integrated Intel cards.
  I can buy a 2011 Mac Mini from a friend pretty cheap (i5, 8GB RAM, 500GB/5400 RPM drive, I’m waiting to hear about the card but its either Radeon or NVIDIA) – now, would this work if I get a second hard drive?

  A few things to consider before even thinking about purchasing the mini. Do you need a mac? Premiere can be run off of a PC, and considering that your budget is of highest concern you may want to see what a PC can offer you price wise.

  Also, what type of footage will you be working with? Will you do heavy motion graphics work?

  I wouldn’t recommend using a Mac Mini for editing. The specs on the 2011 Mini are not very powerful, and you may not have a good editing experience unless you transcode everything before editing. An external hard drive via FW800 is a must, at minimum.

  If you want Apple, the new iMac is a great machine for editing with plenty of power. You want this machine to work for you at least 3 to 4 years while you are in school. The Mini might get you through 1.

  Thanks for replying
  A Mac because I also want to use FCP7 until I get familiar with Premiere, also it seems other stuff runs better on it (Maya for example).
  We have HD cameras, I’m not looking to do anything outside of FCP or Premiere, if so I can use the computers on campus.
  As I said, I’m looking into a Mini since I can get one immediately for a good price, so thats why I’m looking into the feasibility of this Mini + additional drive setup.
