Premiere Pro 5.5…. setting up hard drives
so here’s my situation 🙂
I have a laptop with a 128gb SSD, a 750gb HD, and a 2tb HD external storage.
My OS is on the 750gb HD.
I’m considering re-installing the OS on the SSD, running Premiere off the SSD, and using the 750gb for the scratch disk and project file and media storage with the external for backup.
However…
I’ve been reading that it might be better to keep things how i have it now…. OS on the 750gb HD, using the SSD as the scratch disk, and having the project on the external HD or on the 750gb HD as well.
what do you guys recommend?

Premiere Pro would rarely benefit from a quick startup or scratch disk in my experience. You may see some benefit in preview rendering or rendering final products with preview renders selected; even then, other hard drives would be the bottleneck.
Your first setup is probably the best overall. You’ll probably get more pleasure from the general OS performance increase from the SSD.
If you also use After Effects, I think you’ll find increased performance from the second setup. Even though AE CS5.5 doesn’t have the global cache that CS6 does, it can still benefit from having fast scratch access.

My recommendation is the traditional 750gig HD as your primary drive because, although the trade off is boot speed, you do want some general storage space once you have apps installed.
I’d then suggest the 128 or 256 SSD dedicated for CS applications temp/scratch folders, especially AE’s global cache.

Chances are the last time you asked it was in the AE forum and I weighted the answer for AE performance. Trust me, I won’t remember specific people most of the time so I answered this with Premiere performance in mind. Slightly different answers, same reasoning behind them.
You’ll notice that in both cases I made a special note of After Effect’s global cache as being the primary reasoning behind the SSD recommendation.
