Depth of field in Premiere Pro
Hallo everybody,
i’d like to know how make this DoF effect in Premiere Pro but without Neweblue Essential II, That I’haven’t got, but simply with AE inside plugins or with BBC or Red Giant Suite, that I have.Many thanks!

DoF in Premiere Pro … not in AE. please.

I am not familiar with any way to make DOF in PrP. AE would be the tool of choice in this case.
There might be a way to use the vey limited matte and defocus tools, but you would not get a very convincing effects.
AE is really an extension of PrP these days with the advent of Dynamic Linking.

One way of accomplish this in Premiere is inserting a duplicate clip above the original. Use a garbage matte on clip above (Video 2) to mask the area that you don’t want to have the dof. On the clip below (Video 1) add a Gaussian Blur effect. When you do this the background image (the one you did not mask) will be blurred out simulating the dof effect. There are two big issues with this technique:
* Your video should be static (no camera movement at all) . If not you will have to mask frame by frame.
* The garbage matte of Premiere does not have “mask feather” (available in AFX). Without this the mask looks hard and too lineal.Like others mentioned After Effect works best for this effect.

Instead of using a garbage matte you can use a mask with the Track Matte effect. A mask you can feather.

Hi Ann
How do you feather with the track matte effect (I have CS5.5)? I trail-error for a while, but couldn’t figure it out. I always do this sort of thing in AE, but is good to know how to do it on Premiere just in case.

First put the garbage matte on the clip to set the points, then cut and past the garbage matte onto a white color matte.
Add a fast/gaussian blur to this white color matte for feather.
Anyway feathering a garbage matte is long overdue as is setting curves on the nodes.
