    Hey guys,

After hours of trying all different kinds of export settings and getting nowhere I decided to ask the pros what the best export settings for my project are. It’s a 15 minute short that I filmed using my Canon DSLR, with additional clips that include added effects and graphics edited in After Effects – exported using the default Quicktime export settings. I plan on burning my short film to a DVD using iDVD with a custom DVD menu that I made specifically for it. The reason I still use iDVD is because it gets the job done with little hassle and the flexibility I need, and I don’t feel like spending money on professional burning software just yet.

Typically when I export from Premiere I go with H.264 and ignore most of the other settings because I don’t need perfect quality and I’m usually just exporting to the web. But for this particular project (it’s being entered in my school film festival, which I won last year) I’m especially proud of my cinematography and I’m looking to get the best quality possible to show off my crisp picture and special effects. As you probably know, the files coming off of my Canon SD are 1920×1080 24fps MOV files (there’s also a few 1280×720 60fps slow-mo scenes). The audio was captured on a Tascam recorder with an external mic and added into Premiere.

So like I said, my goal is to get the best export settings that are compatible with iDVD (which never tends to like encoding h.264 videos) and that maximize the quality and picture of my short. I feel like I’m at the point in my career where I need to start taking exporting more seriously.

I’ve tried exporting it while messing around with the settings but it came out with way too much noise and distortion. I hope I have provided enough information for you to get an idea of what I’m looking for.

    Thanks so much,

    Justin B.
