  Changing the names of clips in Premier Pro

  I have two hard drives with all the clips from a short film. All the clips have long numerical file names… it was shot on the RED Scarlet X.

  To edit the film with smaller files, we transcoded the files to compressed PRO RES files. The Large RED files and the transcoded PRO RES files have the same names, just different extensions.

  1. I’ve been told that after I finish the edit (of the PRO RES files) I can link the edit to the larger RED files. Is this doable?

  2. If the answer to questions one is yes, then what if I change the names of the Pro Res Files inside Premier Pro (for organizational purposes)… will I be able to relink the files to the large RED files once the edit is complete?

  1. Yes, this is handled the easiest by exporting an XML file in Premiere, and letting Redcine-X do the linking of the timelines and bringing in the resulting new XML file back into Premiere. Yon can then fine tune the reconform from there.

  You can google this or hop over to Reduser.net to learn more – I haven’t written a step-by-step for it personally. I’d walk a small scene through the process so you see the hiccups first hand.

  2. Changing the name in the bin, so far as I know, won’t create any issues. It doesn’t change the actual file name or path. At that point, why not use the metadata fields for scene and notes and do the asst. editing jive of logging and watching footage? You should *god willing* have script notes as well.

  Hiya…

  Sure you can change the descriptive name of the media in premiere and this will not change the name of the files on the disk.

  However, I’d suggest one slight modification to this workflow….

  don’t use the clip name field…leave that as is…

  in stead you might want to use one of the other user fields in the metadata and not description….

  reason being…. if you ever need to relink….

  you can easily copy and paste the name from the clip in the project panel to use in a OS search dialog if you need to use it….
