CS6 Export HDV 1920×1080 square pixels
Good day,
I have a client that wants the final output to be 2 things. A Quicktime 1920×1080 with the settings of HDV 1080i60 square pixels. A Quicktime 1280×720 with the settings of H264 square pixels.
I am exporting from Premiere with the 1920×1080 settings no problem. But when I bring it into Adobe media encoder it is telling me the source is 1440×1080 square pixels and I don’t understand why.
I think I am missing something but I can’t figure out what.
Any help will be much appreciated.

HDV (which is tape) can only be 1440×1080 with a PAR of 1,33.
Its no problem to export hdv to 1920×1080 or 1280×720———————————————–

So what you are saying is that since the video I want to encode has a HDV codec it will show it as 1440×1080 even though I exported it as 1920×1080?
Is there a way around that?

Hi Brian,
Regardless of the source you are editing, or the Sequence setting, if you truly exported as 1920×1080, 1.0 PAR Square Pixels, then indeed that is what the resulting file specs ought to be. By chance, in AME, did you have “Match Sequence Settings” turned on or something? Can you provide a screen grab of your export settings for review?

No I made a custom preset with the settings 1920×1080. But when I bring that same file back into AME it is saying the source is 1440×1080.
That is the problem I am having. I’m then trying to use that file to export the 1280×720 file. And I’m then getting black side bars.
Perhaps I am going about this the wrong way.

OK, so you set the size to 1920×1080, but if you did not also change the Pixel Aspect from 1.33 to 1.0, that might explain it. Please verify settings

Re-reading your posts, it seems like you exported your 1440×1080 project out to 1920×1080, and then are taking that new file and re-exporting that to 720? That is encoding TWICE, so introducing additional compression loss. You are blowing the image up larger, then shrinking back down again, not to mention the compression hit.
From the original 1440×1080 timeline, you can export to 1280×720 from there. From Premiere through Media Encoder, from source to final delivery codec.

HDV is an anamorphic format so 1080 HDV is 1440×1080. Adobe Premiere automatically stretches it out to 1920 when you’re playing it so you don’t notice the Anamorphic.
When you bring something into AME, it will tell you the actual source settings of your clip. That’s just the source, not what your output will be.
In AME, simply select Square Pixels and 1920×1080 or 1280×720 and you’ll get your nice square pixel end files. Your client asking for the HDV codec and square pixels is a bit of a mismash but it should work.

When I see a bizarre deliverable requirement like this (1080 square-pixel HDV), I always flag it and double-check with the client: most of the time, it’s a mistake or a misunderstanding.
If you modify an HDV preset to use 1920×1080 square pixels, then it’s not HDV anymore, by definition — it’s generic, low-bitrate high-definition MPEG2. If the workflow actually requires HDV, this may not work because it’s not proper HDV. If the workflow doens’t require HDV, then may be higher-quality deliverable options.
If they do really want 1080 HDV, then the standard is anamorphic 1440×1080, and this will be properly expanded to 1920×1080 on playback.
