I am trying to animate newspaper pages that are in pdf format.
When I layer them in a comp certain parts of the page are transparent. Can I change the matte to be solid on each file?
    Thanks,
    Scott.

Had to do a very similiar thing a few years ago, though I left the pages with the alpha intact.

Why not take the pdf, create it’s own composition, put a solid behind it, then drag that into your final output.

Another way, though probably not as elegant as John Cuevas’s suggestion, is to export the PDF as a JPEG and bring that into AE. This allows you to deal with it as a single image and not a bunch of objects. In some cases, it proves to be a little more convenient.

    Best regards,

Yeah, just like the others said. PDFs usually don’t contain a “canvas”.
