  • Premiere Pro CS 6 – Scratch diasc error message and Video preview error; crashes

I’ve now had this problem on more than one of my systems – all Macs, all with Lion OS, 8G RAM, using different file types in different projects.

When working on a project with no problems, putting the project and machine to bed for the night (total shutdown) all seems well. Next day open the same project on the same machine and I get the message

“The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable. To open this project, the scratch disks will be set to your documents folder. Would you like to continue?” with the option yes/no

The scratch discs were set to “same as project”, they are not write protected and are avaiable (I can see them in finder and save to them, permissions are set to read/write). On one machine this is on a seperate internal HDD, on the others a folder on the one internal drive.

Clicking OK opens the project which often (though not always) crashes. If it doesn’t crash I can’t render. Trying to render brings the message

“Video Preview error Error compiling movie Unknown error”

I ran permissions repair several times and there are errors showing which don’t get repaired, even running as root and it makes no difference.

Taking the entire project to another (identical) machine makes no difference, I get the same errors.

I did get around the problem by exporting an XML and opening it from that, but please help, this is starting to get serious. The problem has occured several times now in the first two weeks of using premiere.

Usually this happens when PPro can’t find the camera / media that content was ingested from. In the scratch disk settings there are two areas listed the scratch disk and the media cache. Check to see if the other one (the one for the camera) is pointed at a not mounted SD card or similar.

    Thanks, but no further forward.

I do drum it into the students to copy all media across to a folder within their project folder, where everything else is saved, so there shouldn’t be any external drives to cause problems.

But of course, students being students it is possible … more than possible I suppose!

So I opened the “faulty” project, set the scratch drives to documents as instructed and then looked at the sctach disc settings:

As can be seen the vieo and audo previews have been set by Premiere from “same as project” to the documents folder. I can’t see anything else to change there.

    Looking in Preferences I find

The media cache files are being saved to the system drive, nothing to do with any media card.

Setting “save media cache next to originals where possible” makes no difference.

So I can’t see anything in the project which is looking for a media card. Am I missing something?

A wee add on to the above.

Although I can open the XML project I imported and I can save it as a new name, I can’t simply save changes. I get the beachball of death.

    This is seriously flakey

OK, I seem to have solved it.

What I hadn’t noticed was that it seemed to be trying to load a lot of media – like thousands of clips. The students had loaded all of their media into the project although noting like that number of clips, most of which of course they weren;t using.

So having got into the project with the re-set scratch discs I removed unused media(project>remove unused). It went to town on this and very quickly presented me with a stable, working project and the scratch disc error had gone.

I reset the scratch discs to “same as project” and hit render – all was fine.

So I seem to have cleared the problem, but I’m not happy because I don’t know how it got there. Student error or bug?

So I had the same error. After trying to move my scratch disks and my Adobe Preview Folder, I finally just used “save as” to save a new version directly to my desktop. It created a new scratch disk folder along with the project and it all works great now.
