I was wondering if Calibrated software XD decode is necessary on PC to view and edit material from disc based XDCam HD camcorders. I ask this because I had a job last month where XDCam disc material would not playback or load in premiere pro or in sony’s xdcam browse software. This is not XDcam footage in a quicktime container, this is BPAV structure and MXF files straight from the disc. Installing the trial of XD decode allowed me to view watermarked footage from MXF files that were unable to load before. This confused me because I was under the impression that XDcam HD codec should have been installed with CS6 for native MXF editing and that XD decode was only for viewing and editing XDcam clips ingested on a mac in the quicktime container. Note XDcam EX mp4 clips worked fine the whole time without XD decode. I tried it on 2 different installs of windows and CS6 with the same problem, if it is supposed to work out of the box then it seems like CS6 is not installing the XDCam HD codec properly.

I believe the cameras were xdcam hd pdw-f350 and and pdw-700, tried multiple discs and all had the issue.

At the time I was lucky to have one of the shooters’ macbook pro with avid that was able to view the material and convert selected clips to prores as the project turnaround time was same-day. The issue did cost me a couple hours though and the avid ingestion definitely slowed down the workflow.
