    Hi,

We will have to do realtime editing in Ppro in HD1080p25.
We have some i7 3930k with 16Gb ram, gtx580 and two SSD for system and cache. We will put two 24″ screens.
Our files to edit are mainly file sequences in png 8bit (from compositing softwares).
Files are saved on a file server (windows server RAID6).

So, what would be the best solution to have realtime feedback on HD1080 file sequences in Ppro (CS5 right now, CS6 soon). Do we need a special video card, caching files on editing machine, saving from compositing on this machine, etc ? Or do file sequences have previously to be encoded in a special video card accelerator codec ?

    Thanks
    Kib

For sure, you get the BEST realtime playback when the interface is all contained on a single screen. No clue why, but we run dual screens in our shop and Premiere Pro will drop frames constantly when we have the interaface in a dual screen configuration. The editors accept this for the time being since it’s the only way we can edit. This is even true of our 12 core Mac Pro with dual nVidia cards.

When it’s time for client review or full show playback, we switch the Workspace to a single screen Editing preset and then everything plays out fine.

The two biggest concerns for realtime playback are your system config (CPU / RAM / Graphics Card) and the speed of your RAID. Especially the speed of your RAID.

With our configurations we cut everything raw native from the camera. If we have to capture from tape we capture ProRes quicktimes. Hope that helps!
