  Mac Pro performance issue

  Hi,

  Specs are as follows:

  2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
  ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
  OS disk: Mercury Accelsior Blade ssd (6Gbps)
  SSD Scratch Disk
  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4

  I have been looking at some benchmarking results from people with equivalent Windows machines, however they seem to be achieving much faster render and export speeds.

  Can this be attributed to GPU support that im not getting? Cuda Architecture etc?

  It doesnt seem to be using the machines resources to capacity is what im getting at.

  Just did a test with a 1 minute long sequence (720p, 24fps) with colour correction (Magic Bullet – curves, sharpening, saturation etc)

  3.30 to render, seems slow to me.

  Any advice?

  If this is GPU related, What cards would you recommend? how much of an improvement can I expect to achieve?

  Tough truth: Your Mac Pro is old – that’s why it’s slow compared to PC’s.

  Apple should’ve updated the Mac Pro’s a year ago (or at least this past summer). However, they let them go. As such Apple has missed a cycle of components from RAM to motherboards to CPU’s for the Mac Pro. Therefore, they are slow when compared to the PC counterpart. Depending on whom you read you will hear a) The Mac Pro is dead. Abandon ship for Windows machines. Or b) The Mac Pro will be update in 2013, cool your jets and edit some stories.

  All that said, you would notice a decent bump if you had an Nvidia card. The CUDA technology is worlds better than Open GL and CL on the ATI side.

  Yeah that is a fair point, my home windows machine was getting better results and its a gaming machine!

  I have had this problem solved on the adobe forum however. It was a combination of the old (2010) Mac and magic bullet:
