Is there color correction tools who’s settings will transfer from premiere to After Effects?
Hi,
Our editor is working in Premiere CS6. After editing in premiere, she often needs to send shots into After Effects using the “Replace with After Effects composition” feature. The problem is, she also does some color correction in Premiere that she would like transferred into the After Effects composition. Are there any color correction tools that will maintain their settings when transferred in this way? Back in our Final Cut days, we used to use Magic Bullet Colorista and Automatic duck, and that would transfer the color correction settings for Colorista. Although Colorista II works in both Premiere and After Effects, the settings don’t seem to transfer between the two. We just called Red Giant and they said that they didn’t support that. So much for Colorista. We don’t really like the interface on it, and the only reason we were using it is we thought its settings would transfer to After Effects. Does anyone know of a color correction tool that will do this? Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse? Some of the built in plug-ins?

Hi Matthew,
We usually just end up rendering a TIFF sequence. When it comes to more complexe plugins, DL just can’t keep up. You’ll also find that it’s a lot more stable working that way.

Hi Vince,
We do that too. We just like to use dynamic link to create the AE projects. In our programs, we often have multiple movie clips and images on screen at the same time. After doing rough cuts (with some basic color correction) in premiere, the “Send to After Effects Compostition” Feature makes it easy to move the footage files needed for a scene along with their basic edit into AE to do the the fancy stuff. We’d also like to move any color correction that we have done at the same time. We then render an mov or image sequence from that to bring back into premiere.
Any more ideas anyone?

Magic Bullet Colorista…very easy to use across the Premiere Pro/After Effects divide as well as a very capable color corrector.
One of my staple tools.

Interesting Tim. Are you you on a mac or a PC? We tried Colorista because thats what we used to use to transfer color correction from FInal Cut. The colorista effect did get applied in the AE project when it was transferred from premiere, but none of the settings for that effect came with it from premiere to AE. We called Red Giant, and they said that they didn’t support that. We were doing this on a PC.

I did some tests so I’m answering my own question in case someone else needs it. The settings from the following built-in color correction effects will transfer from Premiere to After Effects:
Effects marked with a * are hardware accelerated in premiere
Under the Adjust category:
Auto Color
Auto Contrast
Auto Levels
*Levels
Shadow HighlightUnder the Color Correction category:
*Brightness & Contrast
Broadcast Colors
Color Balance
Color Balance (HLS)
Change Color
Change to Color
Leave Color
*TintIf you use Colorista, in Premiere, it will apply the Colorista effect to the footage in your After Effects project, but it will be missing most of the settings. When I called Red Giant support, they said that they didn’t support the effects settings transferring between the two programs.
All other color correction tools I tried do not transfer.

This isn’t a solution BUT its a work around. You can use Magic Bullet Looks in Premiere and save your preset once youre done color correcting. Save the preset by going to file –> export looks as, and save that entire preset. Once in you’re in AE you can apply that same Magic Bullet Looks preset to your file and BAM you’re set!

Hi, I had the same problem, using the Primary 3-Way, but after linking comps I:
1. Clicked on the calculator Icon in Premiere CS6.
2. Look for the same values in After Effects.Patience and Time will be required.
If someone knows other way out, looking forward to hear it.
