I’m on a Macbook Air without any GPU acceleration. Is there any product available to speed up the export of an AVCHD edit to H.264 directly from a timeline? We have to get stuff out quick from show floors and up to Youtube, etc. and we used the Elgato USB accelerator, but it only works with iMovie, as far as I can tell. Any ideas?

First, why are you encoding/transcoding on a MacBook Air? Those are woefully underpowered machines for intensive CPU and GPU computations.

Second, look at the Matrox MXO2 Mini Max. It works with all popular NLE’s on the market Adobe, FCP7/FCPX, and Avid. It might be what you’re looking for to give your Air the necessary horsepower to get the job done:

I (and many colleagues) use them because they’re lightweight and easy to tote. It’s too bad Matrox doesn’t make a USB key, just for encoding, because I don’t need any of the other features for the web, and it’s size and cost make a non-starter for what we do.
