Enter the HP Z820
Well, my communication with HP paid off and the delivery time got escalated. The computer and monitor arrived today!
After arrival it was….assembled…tested….GTX 570 got installed…Caldigit Raid was configured…with some minor bumps along the way, but nothing unexpected. Boy, the security measures that Windows need to protect itself are draconian compared to OSX. I understand the need, but it sure makes some things that should be simple, a little less simple.
So, all is well and relocated back into the bay. Next is software installation and KVM (Starcraft) implementation. Then the fun begins. I like how the Z820s user friendly design is reminiscent of the Mac Pro. Swapping cards and stuff is logical, accessible and easy.
Regardless of where I may fall in the PPBM6 speed chart, I feel lucky to be able to jump from an early 2008 Mac Pro (still in service for mail and internet) up to the Starship Z820. With 2 fun music videos under my belt recently, its time to explore new frontiers.

switching from MAC to PC.I might have to do that in a few years myself.

By draconian measures do you mean UAC? IE, you need to confirm every time you install something? You can disable it. I’ve never seen it fire by itself, or caused by anything that wasn’t things I wanted to do which, I guess, would be an actual security threat.

Chris, my first impressions is that OSX is more”refined” and Windows is functional but with a bit less finesse and design.
As you know before I had 4 years with Mac I was only experienced with the PC.
Both do the job, but Apple shields the user (good or bad) from the details and confusions of computer use.
Windows is like a power tool. It very effective, but you better know how to handle it or you can do some damage. Just my transitional perceptions which will change with familiarity. 😀

No its not so much UAC, which I will turn off when I am more comfortable with the system. Its the Security gymnastics I have to do to get the Raid Diagnostic software to open up. Windows security needs a sequence of actions to let me access it. And having to run and update Windows Security Essentials is just a process that reminds me how important it is for Windows to protect itself. That just didnt exist in my experience on the Mac, but its something I will adjust to given time.
A couple of weeks and it will feel more familiar.
I am still using the Mac Pro for mail and web use.Tom Daigon

I wish microsoft would implement a temp admin privilege the way os x does:

I have no strong emotions since , as it turn out, Raid Shield is only needed when I want to look under the hood of the raid system. I realize there is a period of adjustment. And I have been here before, just away for four years. 😀
Once I get past all the preliminary setup stuff. Im sure I will be ecstatic with the enhanced performance and speed!Tom Daigon
