About to tackle my first premiere job (CS6) after many years on Avid and FCP. The project is going to end up as 4 HD screens side by side, all showing different content in sync.
It will be about 8 minutes long.
Most of the footage will be 5k Epic at 29.97. Some shots will span 1 screen, some 2. My plan is to edit the files natively in premiere in a custom 7680×1080 RED sequence (4×1920), with 4 main tracks, each track representing one final display. I will then send the project to AE and render out each HD screen file using the output crop setting in the output templates.
So far in my testing I seem to be able to get ok playback at 1/16 res. and everything seems to work as planned. Anything to watch out for? I’m a little worried that performance might bog down after I’m well into the project.
I’m on an 8 core macpro with 8 gigs of RAM and Mercury CUDA support.
    Thanks
    Chris

    A few things.

First, with the amount of RAM you have, I would worry about performance in After Effects and Premiere in general.

Secondly, I’m a little confused as to why you aren’t transcoding to an editing codec like ProRes or Avid DNxHD using Redcine X. If your output is 1920×1080 for each of the four images then I’d recommend taking the time hit now than try and work from the 5k files that your computer is trying to debayer and scale in real time. You might be able to bump up the preview resolution to something like 1/4th and it should be the same, if not a little lighter, in terms of disk throughput needed. I’d still hope you’re on something like a RAID0 or RAID5 if you expect realtime playback.

You would benefit in a situation where you have 2 images on screen by owning a Quadro 4000 which handles the scaling of video. The system seems very low on ram. I see no mention of a raid array which is really need to deliver the images to the Mercury Playback system in a timely manner.

I am using the Quadro 4000 and I do have a RAID for storage. I am concerned about RAM, and if I start to slow down, then that will definitely be my first thing to address.
The reason I was hoping to use the native RED files is for the integration with AE. I would be linking to the exact same files and all of my scaling and cropping would not have to be re-done.
If I was going to render out DNXHD files (which I still might do), then I would probably cut in Avid since it is my preferred editor and export through automatic duck or AAF directly to AE. The only issue with that is that I would probably have to relink every file manually in AE, as well as redo all of the scaling and positioning.
I am still exploring all of the options at this point.

Oh, and I realize that I won’t get real-time full-res performance. I was just hoping to get enough playback performance to do the content cut reasonably accurately.
I’m not too concerned about the quality at this stage – when I send everything to AE, I will render out my HD streams at full quality.

That sounds reasonable then. If you have a lot of rescaling and repositioning then staying native will give you less of a headache that trying to do what would basically be an offline/online.

Hi Chris! I have a similar project and I wonder if FCPX can work natively with 7680×1080.

My idea is to create 4 films 1920×1080 and once finished, stik them.

The problem is I’m not sure if FCPX will support.

    Thanks!
